Until the the early twentieth century this kinf of tavern was the typical commercial establishment of rural and semi-rural areas of the Viceroyalty of Río de la Plata and later, of the Southern Cone countries, especially Argentina, frequented by gauchos. Its origin dates from the early seventeenth century, and provided back then all necessary products of everyday life: food, drink, candles, coal, medicine and textiles, among others. It was also the social center of the lower classes of the population, the gauchos would gather there to chat. The taverns were places where you could drink alcohol, where cockfights were held, where people could play dice, cards, and organize horse races.
