Romanian Orthodox Monks

Life Behind the Walls of Medieval Monasteries
An intimate photographic report on the daily life, faith and traditions preserved within Romania's historic Orthodox monasteries.

Romania's Living Monastic Heritage

This documentary photo essay explores the daily life of Romanian Orthodox monks living in some of the country's oldest monasteries, where centuries-old traditions of prayer, work and contemplation continue to shape everyday life. Photographed across the historic regions of Bucovina and Maramureș, the report documents communities whose monastic heritage remains deeply rooted in Romania's spiritual and cultural identity. The Painted Monasteries of Bucovina, renowned for their extraordinary exterior frescoes, and the wooden churches and monasteries of Maramureș preserve some of Europe's most remarkable examples of Orthodox religious art and architecture. Several of these monuments are recognised as UNESCO World Heritage Sites for their exceptional historical and artistic value.
