Every year, the fields of Waterloo, Belgium, become the stage for one of the world's most remarkable historical re-enactments. Thousands of enthusiasts from across Europe recreate the uniforms, military camps, cavalry charges and artillery manoeuvres that brought the Battle of Waterloo back to life on the very ground where history was made.
Fought on 18 June 1815, the battle pitted Napoleon Bonaparte's French Army against the allied forces commanded by the Duke of Wellington and the Prussian Field Marshal Gebhard von Blücher. Their victory ended more than two decades of the Napoleonic Wars, reshaped the political balance of Europe and marked the final downfall of Napoleon's First French Empire.
